Cleveland Divers was formed as a branch of the British Sub-Aqua Club in January 1978 by six local divers. The first committee consisted of a Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer and a Diving Officer. By May1978 membership of the Club had incresed to eighteen and a pool session was arranged at Saltburn Sports Centre, where it continues to this day.
By the end of the first year our membership had increasedto twenty eight and the Club purchased its first two complete setsof pool training equipment at a cost of £236.
Among those early members who are still associated with the Club are Bob Hunter, Jeff Thurwell and Steve Paige.
At the end of 1984 the Club purchased its first boat; a 4.75 meter inflatable with a 40hp Mariner outboard engine. The Club continued to prosper and in 1992 with the aid of a sports Council grant the boat was replaced for a 6.5meter R.I.B with a 150 hp outboard engine, and is fully equipped with echo sounder,GPS and VHF radio Today there are fifty two Club members who are qualified to different levels, but our members enjoy their diving and are only too pleased to train others who wish to take up the sport. |
